Biogas: Projects

AGAMA Biogas has undertaken a range of consultancy and implementation projects over the past five years. A few examples of these are outlined below:

Consultancy/feasibility assessment projects

  • Feasibility study for biogas to energy systems at pig farms (2008) AGAMA Biogas was appointed by Premier Pork Producers to undertake feasibility assessments at ten piggery units, to inform the position of the Association with respect to biogas on members' farms. The study included technical and financial cost-benefit analyses, and included both carbon revenues and the utilisation of fertilisers from the biogas systems as scenarios in the assessment.
  • Implementation training for the Fiji National Biogas Programme (2008) and Design of a Fiji National Programme for Biogas (2006)AGAMA Biogas was appointed by the Department of Energy, Government of Fiji to undertake a feasibility assessment and to prepare a programme plan for expanding the national biogas programme in Fiji. More recently, AGAMA Biogas has undertaken extensive training in Fiji in support of the programme which is now being rolled out nationally on the basis of the recommendations made in the earlier work.
  • Feasibility study for a national rural household biogas programme for South Africa (2007) AGAMA Biogas was appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affaris, The Netherlands, to undertake this study. The scope included a situation and stakeholder analysis, a technical analysis, and financial and economic analyses. The study identified over 300,000 households that would immediately benefit from a programmatic rollout of biogas systems, and identified key provinces and institutions that would be a good starting point for the programme.

Design and build projects

  • Design, construction monitoring and commissioning of an onsite wastewater treatment facility (2008) AGAMA Biogas was appointed to design the biogas system components of a new university residence (1,200 people) for the University of Namibia
  • Design, construction monitoring and commissioning of six onsite biogas systems (2008) AGAMA Biogas has designed the onsite biogas systems for six staff residences in Caprivi Parks, Namibia.
  • Design, construction and commissioning of a biogas system for municipal sewage (2008) AGAMA Biogas was appointed to install a 280 m3 biogas digester system in Cato Manor, Durban which comprised diverting a municipal sewer into the biogas digester, after which the supernatant flows through a series of algae and fish ponds. The final discharged water is used for food production, with the overall facility being operated by the local community co-operative.
  • Design, construction and commissioning of a biogas system for chicken litter (2007) AGAMA Biogas installed a biogas system at the Backsberg Wine Estate, near Paarl.
