Green Power - certification in a voluntary market

Clearly, the primary benefit of Green Power is the assurance of independent certification of the qualities and uniqueness of the energy represented by the TRECs. The Department of Minerals and Energy is establishing the independent Issuing Body for South Africa (modelled on the established European IB's) which will:

  1. register production devices (such as wind farms, sugar mills, solar plants and others)
  2. issue unique TRECs for each MWh of Green Power production
  3. maintain a central database of all TRECs issued
  4. redeem TRECs when the 'greenness' of the power is claimed or reported
  5. maintain administrative records for auditing purposes

At this stage the independent certification in South Africa is undertaken by Nano Energy on the basis of the Domain Protocols of the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB, http://www.aib-net.org/) and under the framework of the DME's process for establishment of the IB for South Africa.

In addition to the independent certification of Green Power, GreenX Energy is a member of RECS International (http://www.recs.org/) which is the Association of market players trading in Renewable Energy Certificates.
